Is anxiety a problem for me?

Anxiety is a normal part of life. Everyone has worries and uncertainties. However, anxiety is a problem when it gets in the way of you living your life. Anxiety takes many forms – thoughts, images, memories, and/or worries may replay in your mind. Additionally, every-day tasks feel overwhelming. If your child has difficulties with anxiety, you may be concerned that they are missing too much school or are having trouble making friends. You may ruminate endlessly, constantly ask others for reassurance, or avoid things that you wish you could do. On top of that, there may be a constant weight on your chest or sense of never-ending dread.

When overwhelmed with anxiety, people may be irritable, restless, and constantly worrying. Sleep may become difficult. Signs may include: headaches, gastrointestinal symptoms, and body aches. Thoughts replay in your head again and again as you search for answers that are not there. Furthermore, you may have been to many therapists or tried several medications. Nothing seems to work. It is not your fault. Treatment for anxiety disorders and OCD is very specific and many excellent clinicians don’t know how to treat it.

An OCD Therapist can make recovery possible — at Birch Tree our Chicago-based therapists focus on practical strategies and measurable progress!

At Birch Tree Psychotherapy, we understand anxiety. A certain level of anxiety is healthy, even motivating. When anxiety gets above a certain point, it affects your life. Our licensed therapists offer anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)  treatment, assessment, and consultation. We will work carefully with you to gain an understanding of your thoughts, behaviors, and emotions and develop an individualized plan to move toward your goals. As a member of the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF)Dr. Devlin has completed extensive training in focused, evidenced-based treatments for anxiety disorders and OCD. In turn, all Birch Tree Psychotherapy clinical staff have received specialized training on the treatment of OCD and anxiety.

Finding the right OCD Therapist Chicago can feel overwhelming — we’re here to guide you through proven treatments like ERP and CBT. We use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to help identify and change thoughts that increase and maintain anxiety as well as adjust problematic behavioral patterns. In addition, we utilize Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy, a technique that involves learning to manage anxiety more effectively by facing fears, in and out of session. For panic attacks, interoceptive exposures are particular efficacious. Further, we integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help stop anxiety from controlling your behavior and move toward your values. We can also integrate Habit Reversal Training (HRT) for repetitive behaviors.

Many clients have anxiety that is secondary to trauma. Therefore, our counselors, psychologists, and social workers are trained trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT), mindfulness-based therapies, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), as well as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Because we also specialize in Eating Disorders, we can seamlessly integrate treatment for OCD and Eating Disorders, simultaneously.
